Finally – Get Things Done ☆

If you are having trouble finishing what you started, here is a suggestion to get you motivated.

We have an accountability group of mostly family members that meets once each week and after catching up on what each of us is doing in our businesses we state any problems we are having and receive advice from each member of the group.

We use google+ hangout which is private for those members in a particular circle ( in our case a circles named “family”).  With google+ you can have several people in different circle groups and that way each person that you add to google+ can be designated to an appropriate circle.

To get back to our weekly accountability meetings, after catching up we then each outline our specific plans for the coming week.  Each one of our meetings is planned for a specific time and all the members informed of the date and time.  In past weeks our sessions have been running for at least two hours and sometimes longer.

When we return each week for the google+ hangout, results of our previous plans are revealed and plans for the following week are outlined once again.

We really enjoy these hangouts and the ability to see and talk to up to ten people is a great way to keep in touch and get us all motivated in our businesses, be it blog updates, lesson preparations or whatever each of us is working on at that particular time.

How do you get motivated?  Have you tried google+ hangout yet?

Prefer A Mac or PC ☆

Do you prefer a Mac over a PC?

That is this week’s question which will be put to our panel of experts and here are their answers.

Carol at Motivated to Learn says
I use a PC because that was what I started with years ago. I have often thought of changing to a Mac, but I have so much software for my PC and I don’t think I could use any of it if I switched. Also, I sometimes find software that is only available for the PC. My last reason to stay with what I have is the fact that I don’t have the time or energy right now to learn a new computer system.

Bridget at photos by Bridget says
I use a PC. I am so comfortable using my PC and all my programs that work with it. I am not ready to change and learn something new. I don’t see a reason or a benefit to switching to a Mac right now.

Melanie at Melanie Bremner says
I use a PC. When I used to work for the University of Toronto though, I used a MAC as most schools seem to prefer them. They are good systems and great for those who are doing graphic design. I find the learning curve with them can be a little harder as well as they can also be a little more expensive to purchase so those are the two primary reasons why I use a PC today.

Kyle at Learn A Mac says
I use both a Mac and a PC on a daily basis but I do prefer my Mac. For me the Mac is easier to use with less daily maintenance and I love being able to just shut the lid and open it back up when I want to use it. I use my Mac for all of my daily business and my minor graphic design work. I use my PC for my Point of Sale at work and my major graphic design. My PC has way better hardware and can run multiple Adobe programs at once.

I probably would prefer a Mac however I have been using a PC for all of my work.  I tried a Mac out once and found the features to be many and varied.  When I buy my next computer it may be a Mac but the more expensive price will have to be considered.

Right now I have a Sony Vaio notebook which is my constant travelling companion and I just love it.

What is your preference?

To your computer enjoyment,

Eleanor

New Question – What is the most productive time of your day ☆

Our experts are here once again with their answers to this week’s question – What is your most productive time of day?

We have one more expert added to the group and to refresh your memory, here is the complete list;

Carol Bremner – the non-techie online marketing specialist,

myself, Eleanor McCallum – also known as Granny Blogger,

Bridget Greenwood – our photographer and model train enthusiast,

Melanie Bremner – the content queen and also a fantastic virtual assistant,

Gail J Richardson –  Joint Venture Partner and Affiliate Marketer

and our lone male representative and Mac computer specialist – Kyle Greenwood.

Here are their answers to this week’s question;

Carol’s answer: My most productive time of the day is from 10 am to noon. I’ve had my coffee and my personal time and use those two hours to focus on my most important tasks. During that time, I don’t answer phones or allow interruptions. I also don’t check my email or any social media platforms until after I’ve had that focused work time.

Gail’s answer: My most productive time of the day is from 4- 6 AM. This is my most productive time of the day because it is when I feel my best and my brain is therefore at its best.

Gail J Richardson

Bridget’s answer: My most productive time of the day is10am- noon. I am not a morning person and even though I do get up early I need a few hours to sit around and drink my coffee and read before I feel motivated to work. In the afternoon my brain is a little more sleepy and I feel stiff from too much sitting so I try to do more physical chores or exercise in the afternoon. I have another burst of productivity from 4-5pm. It is really hard to make myself focus on work during my productive times because it is also when I feel the most energized to complete a lot of housework nor other non work related products.

Bridget Greenwood at PhotosByBridget.net

*************************************************************

Kyle’s answer: My most productive time of the day is between 8 PM and 10 PM. That is the time for me that my son and wife are in bed and I am up alone with nothing else to do but online work. I get almost all of my graphic design, emails, website maintenance, and my hobby After Effects and 3D design work.

Melanie’s answer: My most productive time of the day is from 9am-11am. This is when my 2 boys are quiet, watching cartoons and playing nicely. I also have another 2 hour time slot around 4pm-6pm when I can do some more work without interruption. I find I have the most energy and focus in the morning so really need to harness that as best I can.

Melanie Bremner

*************************************************************

My most productive time of the day is just after a late breakfast or early lunch. I seem to work better when I’m not hungry. Anyway, I have been monitoring my abilities and appear to be able to work on my website or blog posts at one of those times and can carry out most of my plans then. Another time that my brain seems to think I should be working is at about 2am when I should be sleeping. If I get up and make a note of any idea I have, then I can go back to sleep again. This doesn’t happen every night but only once in a while.

Social Media – Points of Interest ☆

I’m starting a new category here on the site and calling it Every Gen Chat. Its goal is to share the wisdom from different age groups regarding a common computer related question. Our Experts here are:
Carol Bremner – the non-techie online marketing specialist,
myself, Eleanor McCallum – also known as Granny Blogger,
Bridget Greenwood – our photographer and model train enthusiast,
Melanie Bremner – the content queen and also a fantastic virtual assistant,
and our lone male representative and Mac computer specialist – Kyle
 Greenwood.
We all hope you enjoy this new feature and find it helpful.
Today’s question is “Which is your favorite social media platform and why?”
I would have to say Facebook is my favorite, because of the interaction I get with people there. Sometimes I feel like people aren’t listening on Twitter, they are just talking. I am going to start using Google Plus more though. After hearing that Guy Kawasaki spends two to three hours a day curating content to share on Google+, I think it should demand more of my attention.
*********************************************************************************
My favorite social media platform is Pinterest because I am a visual learner and with Pinterest everything is displayed as an image. For example, a recipe on chicken will be displayed by the photo of the food, not the text, and the image will link you to the text with cooking directions. I can learn so much more about people by seeing what they like (what they pin) than I can by reading their comments and can connect with people that have common interests . Pinterest can be very time consuming.  I try to scan really quickly thru the “pinners that follow me” tab and see what they’ve pinned and then I quickly scan thru the “everything” tab and pin things that interest me. When people follow my boards, I go see if they have boards I have an interest in. You can follow individual boards rather than the person if you aren’t
interested in everything they share.
Bridget Greenwood at PhotosByBridget.net which includes a Pinterest video tutorial if you’d like to learn more.
*********************************************************************************
I would have to say my favorite is Facebook. I am there throughout each day and use it for both personal and business. With my Facebook Page, people can like my page and keep up with what is going on in my business. I have my blog there too and during those times when I don’t know what to write on my Page, I can still have content. I also find that people seem to be a little more interactive on Facebook than on the other sites I frequent. Finally, I like the fact that I can have a live text chat with someone if they are using Facebook when I am. The more I can do from one platform the better.
*********************************************************************************
I, personally, am not a fan of social media for my retail business. I believe that it takes away from the personal customer service that a small business needs and is just not present enough anymore in today’s big box retail world. BUT, for my websites and online business, I like Facebook more than any other. I’ve been using it since 2004 for my own page and am very familiar with how it works. Facebook also has great search engine readability and gets great results in Google and Bing.  Facebook also allows you to have multiple business pages linked to one personal account so I never have to remember extra logins. I’ve never really gotten the hang of Twitter, Tumblr, LinkedIn, or any of the others and they all feel uncomfortable and awkward to me.
*********************************************************************************
As for me, my favorite is Google Plus, mainly because of the Hangout ability. Also because all the people in my circles post very interesting stuff.  I have to say stuff because it is more than just comments.  It can be videos or references to blog posts of my circle friends or pictures, you get the point.  Also Google+suggests others to add to my circles and then I get more stuff from them.
To your blogging & social media enjoyment,
Eleanor McCallum

Summertime – Another Animoto Presentation ☆

While looking out my window this winter day, I am reminded of all the summertime beauty out in God’s world.  I do enjoy the beauty of winter, especially here in the country where the trees are dressed in their blankets of snow.

However, because I did record an Animoto video in summer around this home on Chalk Lake, I thought my visitors would be interested in seeing it.

Product Review: Viral Ad System ☆

Viral Ad System is a new site that says it guarantees more CONVERTING web visitors and online advertising with very little effort or cost. So I decided to put it to the test…

My first impression was the site looks professional and clean, with an attractive look and feel. It is easy to read and understand. Joining the site was easy and painless–they do offer 2 upgrade options but they are not required to gain the benefits.

The Members Area is very well laid out and intuitive–I could figure out what to do after only a few minutes and was able to get up and running in less than 5 minutes. Inside the site, you create links and ads–the links you simply enter any URL links you use into the generator and it transforms them into “Viral Ad System” links. You create ads for anything you want to promote using the Viral Ad System Ad Generator, which is very easy to use. You can create as many links and as many ads as you like. And they are organized in a logical way–links are displayed in the order you create them but also your 5 most recent links appear on the main page for quick reference. Also, since the link generator is the tool you’ll use most, it is also right at the top of the main page when you login. Very smart!

After you’ve created at least 1 link and 1 ad you can start to generate traffic. Just use and promote the new Viral Ad System link instead of the original source link you had. Every time the Viral Ad System link is clicked, the page loads followed by a cool slide-up ad window at the bottom. It displays an ad PLUS an image with your affiliate link that goes back to Viral Ad System. So if anyone clicks the Viral Ad System image they see the site, and if they signup they become your referral. It’s a great viral feature because you can build referrals without even trying to just by using the site.

Now every time the ad window displays (your Viral Ad System links get clicked) you earn credits that get YOUR ad displayed in the ad windows when other members’ links get clicked. So the more clicks, the more times your ads get displayed.  Your first step when creating your ad is to upload an image which is to be 400×100 which, in my usual, learn the hard way method, I got backwards on my first try.  The ad is now the proper size and is waiting for approval as I write this.

Simple Solutions to Cut Back on Fat & Calories & Still Eat Like a Queen ☆

One of the primary reasons many people don’t go on a diet is because they like food. There’s a predominating myth that if you go on a diet the food you eat is going to taste like cardboard. The truth is it can taste like cardboard but it doesn’t have to. You can still cut back on fat and calories and eat like a queen.

Here are 20 simple and easy substitutions to help you enjoy your food and lose weight.
1. Swap whole milk for non-fat milk in your cereal, coffee or tea, cocoa, smoothies and for regular drinking. If you’re accustomed to whole milk, gradually reduce the fat content. Swap it for two percent. When that gallon is gone, buy one percent and then skim or fat free.
2. Snack on fruit and nuts instead of candy bars and chips. Apples, bananas and oranges are tasty. Try apple slices with a little cinnamon sprinkled on them, it’s divine!
3. Switch from white sandwich bread to whole wheat pitas or whole wheat wraps.
4. Snack on popcorn with a sprinkle of parmesan cheese instead of butter.
5. Drink sparkling seltzer water instead of soda or diet soda. You get the bubbles but no calories or chemicals.
6. Eat frozen yogurt instead of ice cream.
7. Make kale chips or sweet potato chips instead of buying potato chips.
8. Replace your sugary peanut butter with natural peanut butter.
9. Use light mayonnaise instead of regular mayonnaise – cut the calories in half and you don’t taste the difference.

10. Order brown rice with your Chinese takeout instead of white.
11. Order a cheese only pizza instead of pepperoni and only eat one slice.
12. Make your own salad dressings, use yogurt instead of mayonnaise or crème.
13. Use Greek yogurt on your baked potatoes instead of sour cream.
14. Spread fruit only jam on your toast instead of butter.
15. Poach your eggs instead of frying them.
16. Use cooking spray instead of butter to lubricate your pan.
17. Substitute apple sauce in your baking instead of oil.
18. Eat an English muffin instead of a bagel.
19. Add lettuce, tomato, and onion or avocado to your sandwiches instead of loading them up with condiments.
20. Add fruit to plain yogurt instead of buying fruit on the bottom yogurt.
These are just a few of the hundreds of ways you can enjoy food and still lose weight. Simple substitutions can make a huge difference.
